About the Artist — Chisom Chiwete

Chisom Chiwete is a Nigerian visual artist whose practice explores memory, identity, and storytelling through oil and acrylic painting, often incorporating collage elements such as newspaper and textiles. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba.

Her work blends portraiture, semi-realism, and exaggeration, using bold colour and layered texture to reflect themes of cultural memory, vulnerability, and lived experience.

Chiwete has exhibited in Canada and Nigeria, completed private commissions, and received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2025). Her work was recently featured at the Black Art Fair at Nia Centre for the Arts, marking her rising influence in contemporary Black art.
