The Art of Burning a Scented Candle (So It Always Smells Incredible)

Candles are often judged by how they smell before use. But performance happens when they’re lit. How a candle is burned, placed, and sized for a room all affect how well it releases fragrance and why a candle may have little scent when lit.

Here’s how to get the most from your candles.

How To Burn a Candle Properly (The First Burn Matters Most)

CANDLES HAVE MEMORY

The first time you light your candle sets the pattern for every burn that follows.

When you light a candle for the first time, allow it to burn until the wax melts fully from edge to edge. This usually takes 2 to 3 hours.

Think of the surface of the candle as a small lake forming around the wick.

If you extinguish it too early, the wax hardens around the edges and a tunnel begins to form down the center. From that point forward, the candle will continue burning inside that narrow tunnel, leaving most of the wax unused and limiting how much fragrance can fill the room.

A proper first burn creates a full melt pool, which allows the candle to perform the way it was designed to. This is one of the most important candle care tips and the key to avoiding candle tunneling.

How Fragrance Actually Travels

INSIDE THE CANDLE, THE WICK BEHAVES ALMOST LIKE A STRAW.

As it burns, it draws melted wax upward where it vaporizes into the air, carrying the fragrance with it.

The larger the melt pool around the wick, the more wax it can draw upward and the more fragrance is released into the room. A small melt pool produces a weak scent. A full melt pool allows the candle to perform fully.

In other words, fragrance isn’t just about the scent itself, it’s about how the candle burns.

Where You Place a Candle Matters

CANDLES PREFER STILL AIR.

When placed near a window, fan, or air vent, moving air disrupts the flame and the way wax melts around the wick. This uneven burning can cause tunneling, reduce fragrance diffusion, and shorten the life of the candle.

Instead, place candles in areas where the flame can burn steadily and calmly. The result is a slower, more even burn and a fragrance that lingers gently in the room.

A Small Habit That Makes a Big Difference

BEFORE LIGHTING YOUR CANDLE, TRIM THE WICK TO ABOUT ¼ INCH.

If the wick is too long, the flame burns too large and too hot, producing smoke and sometimes an ashy scent. If it’s too short, the wick can drown in the melted wax.

A properly trimmed wick produces a steady flame and a clean scent. It’s a small ritual that keeps the candle performing beautifully from the first burn to the last. Proper wick trimming is one of the simplest ways to make candles smell stronger and burn more evenly.

Storing Your Candle

FRAGRANCE OILS ARE DELICATE.

If candles are stored in hot environments, near sunlight or heaters, the wax can soften and the fragrance oils can slowly evaporate. Over time this weakens the scent. For the best experience, store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This preserves the integrity of the fragrance until you are ready to enjoy it.

Choosing the Best Candle Size for Your Room

FRAGRANCE MOVES THROUGH SPACE.

If a candle is too small for the room, the scent will feel faint or disappear entirely, even if the candle itself is beautifully made.

Think of it like lighting a fireplace in a large hall versus a small study, the scale determines the effect.

100 ml Candle - A smaller candle performs best in smaller spaces, where the fragrance can gather and linger in the air. (bathrooms, reading corners, bedside tables, small offices) Best suited for smaller spaces (approximately 80–120 sq ft).

325 ml Candle - A larger candle, or multiple wicks, are better suited for open spaces where scent has more room to disperse. Best suited for medium-sized rooms (approximately 200–350 sq ft).

Choosing the best candle size for a room ensures the fragrance can travel and remain noticeable.

Choose the Right Fragrance for the Space

Once the candle is the right size, fragrance becomes about atmosphere. Scent is a very personal thing. Here we make some suggestions from our clean burning Villa Aburi Candle Collection showcasing scents for specific spaces.

Different rooms benefit from different scent profiles, much like how lighting or textiles change how a space feels.

Living Room Warm, layered scents like our Villa Aburi Ganja Suede create depth and presence — notes of smoke, sandalwood, amber, and musk that settle into the room like evening light.
Guest Room Fresh, bright fragrances like Savannah Daze — citrus, lemongrass, and lavandin — feels clean and restorative.
Bedroom Soft, calming scents such as Labdanum Veil, where lavender, palo santo, and warm resins create quiet and intimacy.
Bathroom Fresh, bright fragrances like Savannah Daze — citrus, lemongrass, and lavandin — feels clean and restorative.
Kitchen or Morning Spaces Fruit-forward scents like Limpopo Peach bring brightness and warmth, with notes of peach, citrus, and mango.
Dining Table Use unscented candles so fragrance never competes with the aromas of the meal. Our Abstract Candleholders are perfect for this.

The art of burning a scented candle (so it always smells incredible) is not a mystery. When used well, a candle should feel consistent from the first burn to the last; steady, present, and true to its fragrance. A few small adjustments in how it’s burned, placed, and chosen for a space can make all the difference in how it performs.
