The Anatomy of the Pakurigo Wave: A Modern Heirloom for Your Home

At September Collective, we believe that every home should hold meaning, and every item within it should tell a story. In a world of mass-produced, disposable goods, we look toward the slow, the intentional, and the soulful.

Nowhere is this philosophy more evident than in our African made Baba Tree Pakurigo Wave Baskets. More than just storage, these are functional sculptures that bring movement, texture, and centuries of Ghanaian heritage into the modern interior.

The Engineering of an Heirloom: The Double-Strand Twist

To understand the value of a Baba Tree Pakurigo Wave, you have to look closer, down to the very fiber. While standard market baskets often use a single strand of grass, the Baba Tree master artisans utilize the Double-Strand Twist technique.

  • The Process: African artisans hand-pick the toughest Veta Vera (Elephant Grass), splitting and twisting two separate lengths together before weaving begins.

  • The Result: This creates a reinforced "skeleton." It is why your basket can maintain its undulating, sculptural silhouette even when empty. It turns a beautiful object into a durable modern heirloom built to be passed down through generations.

The Origin of a Modern Icon

The Baba Tree Pakurigo Wave is a distinct innovation that moved African weaving from traditional utility into the realm of fine art. This signature pattern was co-created by master weaver John Akurigo at Baba Tree Basket Company. It represents a departure from traditional straight-walled vessels, requiring the weaver to adjust tension constantly across a rigorous four-day crafting period

Because no templates or machines are used, every basket is "sculpted" by hand and eye. When you hold a Pakurigo Wave, you are holding a one-of-a-kind original. A direct dialogue between the artisan’s hands and the natural savanna grass.

A Palette Grounded in Nature

Our colour stories are a tribute to the landscapes of Bolgatanga. Whether you choose our signature Minimalist Noir Basket,  a warm  Sienna, or an  Earth tone, the dyeing process is as deliberate as the weaving. Baba Tree uses a small-batch pigmentation process. Raw elephant grass is boiled in organic dyes, requiring multiple baths to ensure the colour reaches the core of the double-twisted strands. This creates a "living colour". A finish with tonal depth and soul that synthetic, spray-painted alternatives simply cannot replicate.

Radical Transparency and Fair Compensation

A key pillar of the Baba Tree community is the belief that master-level craft deserves master-level compensation. This ethical framework is built into the cost of every basket:

  1. Above-Market Wages: Weavers are among the highest-paid in their region, receiving base wages that honour their technical expertise.
  2. Commission and Independence: In addition to their base wages, weavers receive a commission on their specific designs. This model provides health insurance and the capital needed for artisans to invest in their families and community-led development.

Caring for Your Sculpture

Made from resilient natural fibers, these baskets are designed for a lifetime of use, a heritage piece. Should a Pakurigo Wave lose its shape during transit or storage, the elephant grass can be lightly sprayed with water and reshaped by hand. As it dries, the fibers "reset," allowing the basket to regain its signature sculptural form.

It is a living object that evolves with your home.

Bring the Heritage Home

For the purposeful decorator, the Baba Tree Pakurigo Wave Basket is more than an accessory, it is a celebration of heritage, innovation, and the enduring power of the human hand.
