MEET THE ARTISAN

BABA TREE

The Baba Tree Basket Company has been preserving the culture of basket weaving within the Gurunsi Community in Bolgatanga, Ghana for 20 years.

Over 250 Gurunsi artisans practice a time-honoured tradition of heritage weavers technique using Elephant grass to create the beautiful baskets we carry. Each basket is designed through knowledge handed down from the elders in Bolgatanga, a remote town in the Upper East Region of Ghana, otherwise known as ‘’the city of baskets!".

Each basket comes directly from the hands of an artisan weaver and each basket contains their unique signature. Making of the baskets are never rushed to market, but slowly developed to be useful, beautiful, and ethical. Some baskets can take over a week to weave, skillfully crafted by master artisans using a secure double-strand twist technique. This method not only enhances their durability but also makes them ideal as timeless heirloom pieces. The design and development team work closely with the Master Weavers to ensure the authenticity and incredible quality of all their basketry.

Outside of fair wages and commission when the basket is sold, Baba Tree provides comprehensive support for their weavers and their families, covering all medical expenses and fully funding the education of weavers' children.

At September Collective, we proudly support artisans across the African diaspora by showcasing their craftsmanship through thoughtfully curated modern African home decor. Each piece tells a story of heritage, creativity, and cultural pride; brought to life in a way that fits beautifully into today's homes.
