The Nywele Vase Citrine Moss is a sculptural hand-blown glass vase in a deep, smoky olive-gold. Made in Kenya by African artisan studio Kitengela Glass × September Collective, it's inspired by the Bantu knot, each piece shaped without molds, allowing the form to develop naturally in the hands of the maker.

The piece that makes everything around it feel intentional.

Where it lives beautifully

  • Beside a reading chair, where late-afternoon light turns the glass amber
  • Anchoring a mantel, layered with brass and aged wood
  • On its own, unstyled, where the colour can do the work
  • In spaces built around warmth rather than contrast

Citrine Moss sits somewhere between olive and gold, dense and smoky in low light, warmer as it catches the sun. It reads quietly from across a room, then reveals its depth the moment you get close. This is a vase that rewards a second look.

Nywele, meaning hair in Swahili, is a study in translation.

What begins as a cultural expression becomes a tactile object through glass. The raised nodes echo the Bantu knot, not as decoration, but as structure. Each one placed by hand while the glass is still molten.

This is slow design, where time is visible in the final piece.

Created with Kitengela Glass in Kenya, each vase is hand-blown using recycled glass in open-air furnaces. The artisans shape each piece without molds, allowing subtle variation in form, weight, and movement. The nodes are applied in real time, creating a pattern that can never be exactly repeated.

The Nywele Vase is the first in-house design developed by September Collective in collaboration with Kitengela Glass, a new chapter in translating heritage into form.

Citrine Moss was developed as a seasonal expression of that same design, a single colourway available for a short window before the furnace moves on to the next.

No two pieces are identical, because they cannot be.

Styling

  • Best on its own, without competing colour nearby
  • Pairs naturally with brass, walnut, and aged leather
  • A strong choice for a room that leans warm and low-lit

Kitengela Glass

The Nywele Vase is the first piece September Collective designed from concept to creation, brought to life in partnership with Kitengela. The collaboration was a conversation — one that required both sides to find a shared language between an idea rooted in diaspora culture and a material practice rooted in Kenyan craft.
