MEET THE ARTISAN
Maadili Collection
LET NOTHING BE WASTED.
The Maadili Collective fosters partnerships with small-scale artisan communities where opportunities are limited or non-existent in order to promote economic freedom and stability.
Maadili works with artisans within Uganda, who use the large distinctive horns of the Ankole-Watusi, also known as Ankole Longhorn (a breed of cattle native to Uganda’s western region) to create beautiful, high quality, unique contemporary kitchen items.
The horns are a byproduct from the food industry and are environmentally and sustainably sourced. Nothing goes to waste. The beauty of horn is displayed in the variations of colour and tone - ranging from creamy white to caramel to black. Like everything in nature, no two finished pieces are exactly the same.
These horns, which can grow up to eight feet long, are not just for show—they serve critical biological functions. Made of a bony core covered by a keratin sheath, the horns are lightweight yet durable.
From its role in thermoregulation and social hierarchy to its deep-rooted symbolism in African traditions, the Ankole cattle horn stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Ankole-Watusi breed. Its economic value, through craftsmanship, further underscores its importance to local communities.
