Handwoven in Bolgatanga, Ghana by artisan studio Baba Tree, the silhouette was originated by master weaver Jemima Akolgo, whose innovative design sparked a movement in her community and is now celebrated worldwide.

Ebony + Natural Coil keeps the body in warm natural fibre, with black banding worked in horizontal bands that intensify into a bold banded collar at the neck. The effect is grounded and textural rather than graphic, letting the woven form itself take centre stage.

Named after Jemima Akolgo, this basket is a study in legacy.

What begins as a master weaver’s innovation becomes a tactile heirloom through elephant grass. The banded weave she originated is carried forward not as decoration, but as structure passed down through generations of Gurunsi weavers.

This is slow craft, where four days of hand-weaving live in every curve.

Handwoven by Baba Tree artisans in Bolgatanga, Ghana, each basket is made from 100% sustainably harvested elephant grass using the secure double-strand twist weave. The technique enhances durability while preserving the graceful movement of the form, allowing each piece to function as both heirloom and sculpture.

Jemima Akolgo was the first woman in Bolgatanga to weave this innovative silhouette. Each basket carries her legacy in every thread, and the style she originated is now woven by artisans across the Baba Tree community.

Ebony + Natural Coil was developed as a warmer, more textural expression of that same silhouette, for those drawn to natural tone with graphic detail.
